Who We Are
The Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC) is the first private membership club in Los Angeles, founded in 1880 as a place to train the body, expand the mind, and build lasting community. Housed in a landmark Beaux-Arts clubhouse in the heart of Downtown LA, LAAC unites athletics, wellness, dining, co-working, and social life in a single home—a heritage rooted in health and a legacy that continues to evolve.
The Legacy of the Los Angeles Athletic Club: History, Heritage, & Community
The club’s current landmark home is its 12-story clubhouse at the corner of 7th & Olive, designed in 1912 and recognized today as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
LAAC represents over 100 years of Los Angeles history. Charlie Chaplin lived at the club for several years; Mary Pickford, Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Olympic swimmer Johnny Weissmuller were among its members and guests, and Olympic athletes trained in its pool. Today that same clubhouse serves as a vital bridge between LA’s storied past and its dynamic future—a private athletic and social community where history meets modern amenities.

We are happy to offer safe, convenient, and discounted parking for members. Park in our dedicated garage at 646 South Olive Street, connected to the club and located right around the corner from our iconic front door. Look for our legendary winged foot emblem on the awning.

The Los Angeles Athletic Club was founded in 1880, back when Los Angeles was a city of just 11,000 people. It was LA’s first private club. In 1912, our current building was designed and built just for us—and is now a Beaux-Arts icon in the heart of DTLA.
